RSES has a dedicated HEPA-filtered clean lab for the preparation of targets for the cosmogenic nuclide beryllium-10 (and aluminium-26).
The laboratory has two scrubbed fume hoods for the use of hydrofluoric and perchloric acids and a standard hood for cation/anion chromatography.
Radiometric dating--the process of determining the age of rocks from the decay of their radioactive elements--has been in widespread use for over half a century.
"In theory, this storage density would allow all books ever created by humans to be written on a single post stamp," says lead scientist Sander Otte.
Wiens has a Ph D in Physics, with a minor in Geology.
His Ph D thesis was on isotope ratios in meteorites, including surface exposure dating.
They reached a storage density of 500 Terabits per square inch (Tbpsi), 500 times better than the best commercial hard disk currently available.
His team reports on this development in Nature Nanotechnology on Monday July 18.
